Uncovering the Manga Market Growth in 2024

Remember when manga was a niche interest of certain demographics? The manga market is experiencing an all-time high brought by new fans and the recent pandemic. According to the 2024 manga sales statistics, the industry has garnered 13 billion USD in revenue. It may continue to grow up to 16 billion USD in 2025 with a CAGR of 17%.

The continuous influx of new and continuing manga enthusiasts contributes largely to the manga market growth. The anime adaptation of these mangas also helped with audience expansion. As such, manga localization services have become necessary for bringing stories out of Japanese borders and closer to home. Companies such as CCC take much pleasure in localizing manga as manga readers and enthusiasts themselves.

Now that we have covered the statistical side of manga, it is time to delve into the list of best-selling manga of all time.

Top 10 Best-Selling Manga of the Last Decade

Several titles have emerged and re-emerged within the decade from classic fan favorites to new entries. However, with the shifting audience preferences came the ever-changing popularity of manga titles. The last decade has been a rollercoaster of different genres and plots, although the most sought-after demographic continues to be Shounen. As such, we have compiled a list of classics and new entries rising in popularity.

Note that this list references the 2024 manga sales ranking published by Oricon. The sales indicated below are the copies sold by millions within the year. The ones within the parenthesis are cumulative sales from debut up to current.

So, without further ado, here are the top 10 best-selling manga of the last decade!

Tokyo Revengers

Sales: (80 million copies in total)

We are starting strong with the #2 fan favorite of 2022, Ken Wakui’s Tokyo Revengers! It sadly didn’t make it to the list of 2024 favorites, but Toman and Takemicchi continue to be well-loved worldwide. The manga series concluded in 2022, while the anime ended with the Tenjiku Arc in 2023. There are no announcements of Season 4 anywhere in sight just yet.

Attack on Titan

Sales: (140 million copies in total)

One of the timeless classics from the decade—Attack on Titan. Although Hajime Isayama ended the manga in 2021, fans continue to rave about AOT across all social media platforms. The fandom has also popularized merchandise and figurines. New fans also continue to pour into the growing audience brought by live-action and anime. It seems like no one can stop anyone from pledging (or the ever-famous Shinzou wo Sasageyo) to the AOT fever.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Sales: (150 million copies in total)

Everyone loves a good supernatural fight, but Demon Slayer takes the crown with their phenomenal animated fighting scenes. Despite taking only 4 years to complete, Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer quickly shot to fame. By the end of its serialization in 2020, the series had sold over 82 million copies. Although it was not included in popularity rankings in the succeeding years, Demon Slayer is still revered by fans and critics alike.

Spy x Family

Sales: 2.6 million copies (38 million copies in total)

Of course, we can’t forget everyone’s favorite pretend family—the Forger family! With the release of Season 2 and the overall success of Spy x Family: Code White, the franchise continues to be as popular as ever. Now that season 3 is set to premiere in October 2025, Spy x Family will continue to see an uptick in sales. Be sure to check it out once it’s released!

My Hero Academia

Sales: 2.9 million copies (100 million copies in total)

The ever-famous One-for-All holder, Izuku Midoriya, and Class 1-A bring My Hero Academia into the classics list. Kouhei Horikoshi ended the manga’s serialization in August 2024 with the whole cast age jumping 8 years into the future. Although Horikoshi kept hinting at My Hero Academia’s end since 2021, fans were excited to find their favorites’ Pro Hero versions. Another good news for fans is that the anime is still ongoing. With the recent release of the final chapter, MHA is expected to sell more copies for a few more years.

Haikyu!!

Sales: 3 million copies (70 million copies in total)

Sports manga enthusiasts know the name Haikyu!! from way back. Although the series concluded in 2020, new and old fans continue to remember the series as the best sports manga of all time. As such, four years after its completion, fans continued to celebrate Haikyu and brought new fans into the fandom. Merchandise and spin-offs also emerged to continue the Haikyu hype.

Kingdom

Sales: 3.2 million copies (100 million copies in total)

One of the classics from 2006! Despite the foreign historical setting, fans enjoy the classical retelling of the Warring States era. Yasuhisa Hara’s Kingdom follows the story of Li Xin, the general of the incoming emperor Qin Shi Huang. This details a series of fictional accounts of what led to the most important part of Chinese history. Although lacking online advertisements, Kingdom is one of the best-selling manga worldwide thanks to Yasuhisa Hara’s exquisite storytelling.

Blue Lock

Sales: 3.8 million copies (40 million copies in total)

Onto the newer and fresher entries on the list is another sports manga, Blue Lock! Despite being fairly new, Blue Lock has easily captured the fans’ interest with their cutthroat competition and egoistic ideals. The manga is written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura with currently over 32 volumes in circulation. Both anime and manga are still ongoing, so we’ll surely see more about their journey towards being the world’s greatest egotist striker.

One Piece

Sales: 5.2 million copies (516 million copies in total)

The list won’t be complete without the best-selling manga of all time. The one, the only: One Piece! Trust us when we say the One Piece treasure is still nowhere in sight, but the Straw Hats are well-loved by fans! The manga has been ongoing since 1997 and currently has over 1133 chapters. With Eiichiro Oda continuously updating us about the Straw Hats and their journey, the hype is expected to continue into the foreseeable future.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Sales: 7.6 million copies (100 million copies in total)

Stunning blue eyes, white hair, black blindfold—we can all imagine a certain strongest someone, can’t we? We are ending the list with the most-sold manga of 2024, Jujutsu Kaisen! Although it had already concluded with, spoiler alert, Satoru Gojo’s not-resurrection, the manga peaked in 2024 with its finale arc. Unfortunately, Gege Akutami currently has no further plans with Jujutsu Kaisen. Not to worry, though! We can expect it to stay popular with the incoming release of the animated Season 3.
